Create an Outdoor Space That Fits Your Property

Good landscaping design starts with understanding how you want to use the space. A front garden may need a more welcoming approach to the house, while a backyard might benefit from a comfortable seating area, greater privacy, or clearer connections between existing features.

We consider views from inside the home, walking routes, changes in elevation, and how different areas relate to one another. A thoughtful layout can make a large property feel more connected or give a smaller garden a greater sense of purpose.

Landscape Planning for McLean Properties

Our landscape designers in McLean begin by learning what you want to retain, improve, or introduce. Existing features are assessed before decisions are made about grading, planting, drainage, irrigation, and construction.

McLean properties often have established vegetation worth preserving. Designing around healthy mature trees may influence the location of a patio, the width of a walkway, or the selection of plants beneath the canopy.

Our landscape design and installation process brings these considerations together before work begins. It also allows practical issues, such as water collecting near the house or difficult access between garden areas, to be addressed within the design.

Bring Structure to Your Yard With Hardscaping

Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor living features give a garden its physical framework. Their placement affects how comfortably people can move through and use the property.

We understand that a patio should have enough space for its intended furniture and activities. Walkways need comfortable proportions and sensible connections. On sloping ground, steps and retaining walls can help create usable levels while managing changes in elevation.

Wheat’s also designs outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and other gathering spaces. Carefully positioned landscape lighting can make paths, steps, and seating areas easier to use after dark.

Planting & Garden Design That Complements the Home

Planting gives the finished landscape its character. We select trees, shrubs, flowers, and groundcovers with attention to their mature size, seasonal appearance, and growing conditions.

We ensure that our design for planting beds softens architectural lines, frames entrances, and provides privacy without closing off desirable views. A combination of evergreen structure and seasonal flowers can keep the garden interesting throughout the year.

Our custom landscaping in McLean also considers future upkeep. Appropriate spacing, irrigation, pruning requirements, and plant health are part of creating a garden that continues to look good as it develops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Established landscapes bring their own design considerations. These are three questions worth exploring before making changes.

How does Wheat's design around mature trees and established landscaping?

We assess existing trees, their root zones, shade patterns, and overall condition. The design can then accommodate valuable planting while introducing new features where appropriate.

Can a landscape redesign address drainage problems without sacrificing appearance?

Yes. Grading adjustments, drainage systems, and suitable planting can be incorporated into the overall layout. The approach depends on where water collects and how it moves across the property.

How are long-term maintenance needs considered during the design process?

We consider plant growth, watering, pruning, and seasonal care when selecting materials and planning beds. Wheat’s also offers ongoing landscape maintenance to support the finished design.
